Becoming approved as a foster carer can take as little as three months with To the Moon and Back Fostering. However, every application is different, and the exact timescale will depend on your circumstances, availability and how quickly the necessary checks and references can be completed.

What happens during the fostering assessment?

The assessment is designed to make sure fostering is right for you and your household, while helping you prepare for the role. We will support you throughout the process and give you plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Your journey will normally include:

 

  • An initial conversation to learn more about you and answer your questions about fostering
  • Completing your application and the required background, medical and reference checks
  • Meetings and home visits with a social worker, who will get to know you and your household
  • Preparation and training to help you understand the needs of children in foster care
  • A final decision about your approval as a foster carer

What can affect the timescale?

Some checks may take longer than others, and your availability for meetings and training can also affect how quickly the assessment progresses. Changes in your household or personal circumstances may require additional conversations.
